DNA micro-arrays result in massive gene expression data, both in terms of the number of genes and number of tumor samples/conditions. In order to dig for gene markers and functional relations between genes in these massive datasets, efficient data analysis techniques as classification and clustering become inevitable. However, the absence of a priori knowledge about the data demands selecting efficient clustering algorithms. Moreover, combining clustering with related pattern analysis methods as core/outlier identification (within a hard/fuzzy framework) aims at increasing the depth of cluster analysis, as understanding the overlap between expression clusters and interpreting the gradual change of patterns within the same cluster.
